Netgear FVS318NA Review by azsusieq (Tucson, AZ)

This unit was easy to purchase but very difficult to work with, not user-friendly. Initially, I called Netgear tech support to get it configured to my online broadband modem as there is no software CD to do this. The support was not pleasant, way too techy for me to understand. Having said this, months later we also had to disconnect all our devices and move them. Now there is NO tech support, except if we pay a huge fee!
so we bought a Linksys that has user-friendly software and voila! We are online!

As a security consultant, I consult people everyday on the need for a solid defense-in-depth strategy to protecting their network resources from potential attacks. The same applies to your home networks! Most broadband/HSI providers do not provide much in terms of securing "your assets", but rather, are interested in protecting their own. Often times, the perimeter equipment that is recommended (such as a typical wireless AP/router) does not really provide much in terms of security, and does nothing in terms of providing remote connectivity to resources on your home network when away.

In comes the FVS318 Firewall with built-in IP Security (IPSec) Virtual Private Networking (VPN) capabilities. The appearances of this appliance seemed to meet almost all of my basic requirements ... with one key exception: NetGear does NOT provide support for remote Mac OS X clients in any of their VPN solutions and corresponding documentation. Most client OS's support VPN's (Windows XP/7, Mac OS X, Linux/Ubuntu, Android, iOS, etc.) that require a "login mechanism" for user authentication, and they utilize a secure tunnel to maintain communications. The FVS318 is really meant for a site-to-site typeo of VPN which utilizes the IPSec tunnel without any user authentication. This would be the case when two branch offices are connected together.

Enough of the heavy technical details ... the problem is "how can I connect my Mac OS X computer to the FVS318 remotely?".

After researching this for some time, I found two products that both work exceptionally well for the Mac environment. The first is freeware called IPSecuritas from Lobotomo Software. This comes with a preconfigured template for the FVS318. The other, which is available for a free, is called VPN Tracker. Like IPSecuritas, it also has preconfigured templates for the FVS318.

So, if you are considering a security appliance to use at your home, and are concerned about the lack of Mac client software, do not worry any longer ... a solution is available to make your FVS318 work seaminglessly in your local and remote network.

Netgear FVS318NA Review by Xipper (Portland, OR United States)

I'm sure when this device was released it was a great product, however home/office broadband has accelerated significantly and this device no longer meets modern standards. If you were still using old T1 circuits to connect perhaps this thing is fine, as it won't be the bottleneck...however with any modern DSL or cable modem this device is going to cause you pain.

I have a cable modem and have been using Apple routers for quite sometime with great performance (20-35mbps to the Internet), however I wanted something that would also give me the ability to VPN into my home network when I am on the road for business. I purchased this Netgear device locally and rushed home to try it out. I connected it to my cable modem and my laptop to it. After running through the setup wizard I was connected to the Internet, that was simple.

I then proceeded to perform speed tests from various testing sites, the results were consistently limited to ~8mbps..that is 8 mega_bits_ per second, not bytes. I unplug the connect my laptop directly to the cable modem and run the same test, now I get 32mbps...I swap back and forth and inspect the configuration of the Netgear hoping to find some setting to help improve performance, but I find nothing.

So this device ships with 100mbps Ethernet ports, however for inside-to-outside performance it seems to max out at 8mpbs, might as well have 10meg ethernet ports and stop deceiving us. I am returning this ASAP.

If you just need a slow VPN capable firewall, this may work great...but by today's standards it is not worth the price. When any off the shelf home "wireless router" with built-in firewall can match my cable modem in performance, this dedicated device can't even come close. Yes, I realize it has a "better" firewall...but I'm not willing to suffer through 5+ year old speed standards.
